MAKE AMERICA GRAPE AGAIN
Food & Wine reports the 10% universal tariff on all U.S. trading partners, with higher rates such as 20% for the European Union and 30% for South Africa, will significantly impact wine imports. U.S. importers are required to pay these tariffs upon the arrival of goods, leading to increased prices for consumers and financial strain on businesses throughout the wine supply chain, from importers to retailers. Although the tariffs aim to boost domestic production, they may ultimately harm the U.S. wine industry by reducing choices, raising prices, and provoking retaliatory trade actions that could decrease exports of American wines.
THE FARM ECONOMY’S NOT FINE
The March Ag Economists’ Monthly Monitor reports that 62% of agricultural economists believe the row crop sector is currently in a recession, with 85% predicting this will accelerate consolidation among farms and agribusinesses. This downturn is marked by low commodity prices, such as those for cotton and wheat, and rising input costs that are outpacing revenues, leading to financial strain across the sector. A downturn in the ag sector can have wide-reaching impacts—not only threatening farm operations and rural economies, but also affecting food supply chains, prices, and related industries across the country.
