The Brown Season

The little podcast that could is in its FIFTH season. Maureen will be the first to tell you that she began this podcast to make people talk about all the bad things that happen in business (hence the name “Spilled Salt”). We’re not here for the glow up, we’re here for the REAL. The ups, the downs, the ins, the outs from those folks who have lived to tell about them.

This season, like the others, features guests from all avenues of food, beverage, and agriculture, in all stages of business and growth. But we’ve nicknamed it the Brown season as that seems to be the surname of almost half the guests!

Inspo From Maureen

One of my favorite questions, especially when it comes to the trials and tribulations of business, is to ask, “Is the juice worth the squeeze?”

Every entrepreneur I’ve ever met has big goals and dreams. They have goals and dreams so big that they’re scary. We have these wild and hairy audacious goals that sometimes carry us away. And we put ourselves through a LOT of crazy challenges trying to make these dreams come true.

For me, sometimes I find myself championing projects that strike a fire in me that I didn’t expect – like this mural project in Clifton Springs that is finally happening. I spent years chasing this dream and often wondered if I should just give it up. But as I saw paint finally hit that wall a couple of weeks ago, I can confidently say the juice was worth the squeeze on that one.

So I’m here to say to you – keep squeezing. Keep planning. Keep trying. Keep thinking bigger. Keep your focus. And keep looking for those other relentless, tenacious dreamers like you. (Let me know if you want to learn our secret handshake).

CLIMATE CHANGE KEEPS US UP AT NIGHT

Whether we’re complaining about the weather, soaring household expenses, or supply chain interruptions, we know we’re barely skimming the surface of climate change. We’re doing our small part working with partners like AI-CLIMATE, ProAgni, SUNY Research Foundation, and CAST Farm of the Future. But the fact is that in today’s world, we’re still seeing major weather events like late-season frosts causing catastrophic crop loss or Hurricane Katrina causing widespread devastation.

THE RABBIT HOLE TO NOWHERE

You don’t want to see our news feeds. As marketers, we’re constantly doing research, looking for design inspiration across industries, and trend spotting the hottest new thing so we can jump on it before it goes viral. (At least this is what we tell Maureen when she catches us in a doom scrolling trance.) But our social feeds are no joke WEIRD thanks to this mixed bag. If your feeds are full of junk, too, here’s how to escape the rabbit holes you’ve fallen down.
